When it comes to sugaring hair removal treatments, one aspect that takes center stage in my discussions with clients is personal hygiene. As a seasoned Sugaring Specialist, I cannot stress enough the fundamental role that proper personal care plays in the success of your sugaring hair removal treatments.
However, the path to personal hygiene isn’t always straightforward. Unfortunately, the world of personal care is full of myths and misconceptions that can lead to confusion, especially when it concerns sugaring treatments. It’s easy to get lost in a sea of misinformation, but gaining a clear understanding is as essential as booking your sugaring appointment.

Personal hygiene, for instance, does not simply mean scrubbing yourself clean or using an array of products. It’s about maintaining the right balance of cleanliness without disrupting your body’s natural pH levels or stripping away essential oils.

Personal Hygiene Basics

To help explain, I love to use an analogy that my clients find particularly helpful, “The oven is self-cleaning, but the stovetop is not.” This adage refers to the concept that some parts of our bodies, just like an oven, are self-cleaning and need little to no interference from us. For instance, the vagina naturally maintains its pH balance and cleanliness. Therefore, nothing should be placed inside the vagina except for medical or menstrual products, like tampons and cups. Please, steer clear of any internal cleaning products; they could disturb your natural balance and lead to problems.

The exterior parts, like the labia, pubic bone, backside, between the cheeks, and between the thighs, can be likened to the stovetop. They require regular cleaning to maintain optimum hygiene. It’s important to remember that cleaning these areas doesn’t mean stripping them of their natural oils or disturbing their pH balance with harsh chemicals; instead, use gentle, fragrance-free, pH-balanced washes to keep these areas clean. My favorite, and one that I recommend, is the Se-Brazil Personal Cleansing Bar. This all-natural personal cleansing bar helps with body odor, dryness, and pH balance and is safe for daily use on even the most sensitive skin.

Prepping Your Skin for Sugaring

Personal hygiene plays a significant role when it comes to sugaring treatments. Well-maintained skin provides an optimal environment for the sugaring paste to grip hair effectively, resulting in a smoother and more comfortable hair removal process. Before your appointment, ensure that the areas to be treated are clean and free from oils or lotions.

One common myth is that it’s beneficial to exfoliate just before a sugaring appointment. In reality, this could lead to skin sensitivity and should be avoided. A more effective approach is to gently exfoliate a couple of days before your appointment, ensuring your skin is in optimal condition for the treatment. I recommend using Sweet & True True Smoothing Serum, also known as, Ingrown Serum to gently exfoliate and help lessen the discomfort of wax and sugar by preventing sore, ingrown hairs.

Intimate hygiene before your sugaring appointment affects your results and creates a more comfortable and respectful environment for your esthetician. It’s important to bathe before your appointment, especially if you’ve had intercourse or worked out. If bathing is not possible, please use the provided unscented, medical-grade wet wipes. I value your health and comfort and appreciate your reciprocation of that respect.

Maintaining Hygiene After Your Brazilian

Post-sugaring hygiene is crucial in ensuring optimal results and preventing potential skin issues, and this involves keeping the treated areas clean and free from harsh chemicals. Another pervasive myth is the notion of “the more product, the better,” which is especially false in post-treatment care.

Following a sugaring session, your skin needs time to recover. Applying heavy lotions can clog the pores and lead to ingrown hairs or irritation. A lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer, applied after 24 hours, is a more suitable option, my favorite to recommend is Sweet & True Amore Body Oil. Stick to gentle, pH-balanced cleansers and consider exfoliating a few days after your session to keep your skin smooth and healthy.

Such myths cloud the understanding of personal care and can adversely affect the outcomes of your sugaring treatments. It’s important to arm yourself with correct information and adhere to best hygiene practices to maximize the benefits of your treatment.
