Let’s normalize something real quick: not knowing how to care for your intimate skin does not make you dirty or weird. It makes you human.
As a longtime Richmond Brazilian Wax Specialist and intimate skincare educator, I can tell you with 100% confidence, most women were never taught how to properly wash, cleanse, or care for their vulva. That’s why I do what I do.
In fact, let me tell you a little story.
I didn’t know to wipe front to back until I got my first UTI at 18. A doctor had to teach me.
I didn’t know about properly cleaning up after sex until I saw my second Brazilian waxer.
Both moments were awkward, slightly embarrassing, and, looking back, life-changing. Because they opened the door to a whole world of body literacy I had been missing.
And now, over twenty years into my career as a waxing specialist in Richmond, VA, I make it my mission to help women learn what no one ever taught them.
A lot of people assume that hygiene is something we all just…know. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Every day, I work with women who come into the treatment room and whisper, “I know this is probably a dumb question, but…” and what follows is almost always a really good question about intimate hygiene, skin irritation, ingrown hairs, or aftercare.
I tell them the same thing I’ll tell you:
There’s no shame in not knowing. The only shame is in pretending this stuff doesn’t matter, because it absolutely does.
Whether you shave, sugar, wax, or go au naturel, intimate skincare matters. And no, just rinsing with water isn’t enough.
Here are a few things I always teach my clients in Richmond (and now, right here on the blog):
1. Cleansing Is NOT Just Rinsing
Rinsing is just… water. Cleansing involves a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser, like Se-Brazil’s Personal Cleansing Bar, made specifically for the vulva. Harsh soaps or body washes can cause irritation, disrupt your skin barrier, and throw off your natural balance.
If you’re experiencing dryness, itchiness, or chronic irritation, your cleanser (or lack of one) could be the issue.
2. Yes, You Should Moisturize Daily
This surprises so many people, but moisturizing your intimate skin is one of the best things you can do, whether you remove hair or not. Friction from clothing, hot showers, and hormonal shifts can leave this area dry or uncomfortable. A non-comedogenic, fragrance-free moisturizer like Se-Brazil’s Ouch Balm Oil or Solid, can make all the difference.
3. You’re Probably Exfoliating Too Aggressively
Let’s talk exfoliation. You do not need to scrub like you’re sanding furniture.
The vulva and bikini area are sensitive and should be treated that way. A gentle enzyme-based exfoliant like Se-Brazil’s Exfoliating Enzyme Spray, is your best friend. Not only do they manage ingrowns, but they also keep your skin soft, clear, and bump-free.
4. Aftercare = Preventative Care (And 80% of Your Hair Removal Results)
Whether you visit a hair removal provider or handle grooming at home, what you do to care for your skin matters. From gentle cleansing to soothing post-wax masks, consistent aftercare helps prevent irritation and keeps your intimate skin healthy, calm, and clear.
If you’ve ever asked yourself:
“Should I be washing down there differently?”
“Why am I getting so many ingrowns?”
“What products should I actually be using?”
“Is it weird to moisturize my intimate skin?”
You’re asking the right questions. And this is the space to get answers, without judgment.
I created my intimate skincare and wax studio in Richmond to be a safe space for these conversations. It doesn’t matter what stage of life you’re in – young adult, new mom, or seasoned self-care pro, your body is worth learning about and caring for.
I didn’t become a waxer just to remove hair. I do it because it gives me the opportunity to educate, empower, and care for women who were never given a roadmap for their own bodies.
My passion for intimate skincare was born out of my own confusion and curiosity. Now, I get to turn around and help other women feel more confident, more informed, and more in control of how they treat their skin.
Whether you’re prepping for a Brazilian wax, looking for tips on how to avoid ingrowns, or simply trying to feel less weird about your body – I got you.
Here’s What You Can Expect From Me
I’m not here to sell you 10-step routines or pressure you into waxing or sugaring if it’s not your thing. I’m here to help you feel confident in your routine – whatever that looks like.
Whether you’re ready to book your first Brazilian wax or sugar, revamp your intimate skincare routine, manage your ingrowns or finally stop guessing when it comes to intimate hygiene, I’d love to help.
Because no one taught us, but we’re learning now. Together.
