One of the most common questions I get from new guests is: Does Brazilian sugaring hurt? It’s top of mind for most people, especially if you are considering Brazilian sugar or wax for the first time. The short answer is that you will feel some discomfort when removing the hair from the root. However, it is not unbearable, and you should never be in pain. Every client is different, and there are many things that we can do to minimize the discomfort.
Before jumping into how we can minimize the discomfort, let’s discuss what Brazilian Sugaring is. Sugaring removes body hair with a simple, natural sugar paste made of water, lemon, and sugar. The sugar paste is scooped into the body hair against the natural direction of hair growth and removed using a repeated flicking motion in the same direction as your hair growth to remove the hair from the root.
A Brazilian sugaring is an intimate hair removal that removes the hair around the front of the pubic bone, around the external genitals, between the upper thighs, and between the cheeks. You can talk with your technician if your personal preferences include leaving a strip of hair or removing it all.
No other appointment will be as uncomfortable as your first Brazilian sugar. A Brazilian becomes so much easier and virtually painless when you stick to a regular schedule every 4-6 weeks. Why? Because the more consistent you are, the less coarse your hair becomes, and there is less hair to remove at each appointment. Some people even experience permanent hair loss! (Yes, please!)
Home care is also essential when it comes to minimizing discomfort. I sell various products that I highly recommend to my clients in the studio and online. When used correctly (and consistently), these products will reduce discomfort. How? When the skin is moisturized, the hair comes out easier. But please remember we do not recommend using any products or moisturizers the day of your Brazilian sugar appointment.
There are several tips and tricks to help alleviate discomfort, such as applying pressure to the area and breathing exercises. I do everything that I can to make you as comfortable as possible.
You can also help by holding your skin taut as directed during your appointment, which helps minimize discomfort.
Avoid caffeine (coffee or soda) before your appointment, as that can contribute to discomfort. You may also benefit from taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory or pain reliever, such as ibuprofen, before your appointment. Please refer to your doctor before taking any medications.
Remember, the discomfort you experience during Brazilian sugaring is short-lived. It is only temporary discomfort that gets easier and easier when you stick to a regular maintenance schedule.
